Clare’s character comes out in the garments and other textile items she produces in a wide assortment of materials and textures.
“I use a range of fabrics and textiles to create one off individual wearable works of art.
I include a great deal of machine embroidery as I feel it unifies the work. The embellishment enables the observer to see the energy, which flows through all creation, and is simply represented as sparkling light waves.
I prefer to predominantly work with contemporary and antique, unusual and unexpected, reclaimed and rescued fabrics in my designs. I feel the use of materials, which have been discarded after their first use as fashion items, are a way of addressing my concerns about the wasteful production of consumables in our society.
Consequently every item I make has a narrative within it of the journey the fabrics have taken.
This is one of the reasons I am able to make commissioned objects incorporating the clients’ favourite scraps of fabric, to tell the story of their choice.”
